At the National Development Council meeting, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi was at his sarcastic best. Speaking of the corruption in the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MNREGS), he said, “Yeh jo Mahatma Gandhi ke naam par corruption chal raha hai, isko bund kariye aur agar CBI ke paas time ho, to usko ispe lagaiye (stop this corruption in the name of Mahatma Gandhi and if the CBI has the time, get it to investigate this).” Since Modi was obviously alluding to the CBI inquiry into his Cabinet colleague Amit Shah’s role in the killing of Sohrabuddin Sheikh, many in the room burst out laughing.
