Chhattisgarh to develop model township
BS Reporter / Kolkata/ Raipur Jul 09, 2010, 00:49 IST

Chhattisgarh government has approved its ambitious town development scheme Kamal Vihar that will come up as a model and modern township on the outskirts of Raipur.

The township, in the line of modern housing projects in Chandigarh, Noida and Ahmedabad, will be set up in eight sectors in a sprawling 16,500 acres of land. Raipur Development Authority (RDA) will execute the project.

Chhattisgarh government has approved the project and the notification to this effect will be issued soon, Chief Executive Officer of RDA Amit Katariya said. "Once the notification is issued, the agency will soon start the work on the project, he added.

Initially, the work would start on Sector 4. The agency will require 2,200-2,300 acres for the same. The RDA officials said that Rs 1000 crore had been earmarked to start the ambitious Kamal Vihar project that would set up a well-organised township in the Chhattisgarh capital.

Before the state government's nod, the RDA officials had to pass through tough pace following strong resistance from the people backed by political parties. For the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government, it was another challenge to put the project on roll as its own senior leaders opposed it following the conditions of the scheme.

Under the scheme, the owner of land has to submit his land (irrespective of whether it is unutilised or developed) and in place of it, receives 35 per cent of the land submitted in the developed project.

The officials said the authorities disposed off over 2,600 claims and objections submitted by the people.

It was only after settling all disputes that the RDA gave final shape to the project and finally got the approval from the state government, they added.
